DFD (Depth Field Detection)
Well, this is going to be an interesting exercise in tiptoeing the line between general knowledge and some of the most classified information within GDS. To be honest, I am almost certain there’s an Intelligence Legion spook standing over my shoulder right now, ready to cut my fingers off should I write down the wrong thing. Not quite, but this section is actively monitored by my legion and the Intelligence Legion even during editing, so take that as you will. – Ye-Jun
To that end, I will do my best to convey this information in the most
generalized, top-level manner possible to avoid any specific details.
Unlike the other sections, I do not recommend you look up information
regarding DFD’s functionality, nor should you go witlessly searching for it
within Tome.
Usage, details, technical specs, and other crucial information is made
available to legionnaires who need to know about it. And if this is your
first time hearing of DFD, you most certainly aren’t within that group.
DFD stands for Depth Field Detection and is the system we use in place of radar. Much like radar, DFD systems can track movement, speed, position, direction, friend or foe identification, and more. When I say “more”, I want you to take your expectations and multiply them times ten; that’s about as specific as I’m willing to get.
Like radar, DFD systems are implemented within nearly everything GDS does relating to sensors and intel systems. This includes:
- Fortress and base defenses.
- Missiles.
- Drones, both recon, defensive and offensive platforms.
- Vehicle and aircraft sensors/navigation.
- Squadron level kits, such as the standard helmets used with Tungsten Skin loadouts.
- Other areas I am not going to bring up.
In terms of capabilities, I am entirely unsure of what I can even discuss
within the confines of this document. I cannot provide examples from when
we were creating it in the lab, nor can I provide case studies of its usage
in the field.
Revealing what DFD is capable of detecting isn’t on the table, whether that
be macro or micro in terms of scale as that reveals the system’s potential
in both directions. I certainly cannot discuss the coverage a standard DFD
system has, nor can I disclose the barest hints at how it works in even the
most vaguely worded ways possible.
At most I can state that it greatly contributes to the immediate and unified sharing of data. The information DFD provides to say, a Wisp drone, is immediately available to every other component within our combined arms framework. There are no “middlemen” between the information collected by DFD and the rest of our forces: it’s available to them all in real time with minimal processing power required by any supporting hardware.
That’s as much as I will say on the matter.
To summarize; why the hell are you demanding I write about this in the
first place?
DFD is a sensor system that’s pivotal to our operations, it’s extremely
versatile, and the inner workings are classified to such a degree that
anyone outside of a SCIF located within a SCIF will disappear within
minutes of disclosing anything related to it.
As is the unofficial motto of the Intelligence Legion; NOYFB.
Don’t ask.
