As the 6 th Legion of GDS, the Mechanical Legion acts as the repair, engineering, construction and maintenance force of GDS.
Around the time that GDS was acquiring vehicles, it was simultaneously
acquiring a whole host of future problems. Within weeks of purchase and
usage the trucks were beginning to blow gaskets, fuel lines had broken due
to age, an entire engine had seized up, and in one instance an oil filter
somehow caught on fire. With all of these issues being beyond the skills of
anyone in GDS at the time, Chaplain Klein tracked down and asked a favor of
someone he’d met two years prior.
After agreeing to the work, Lee Baxton showed up to the GDS main office and
rebuilt the engine of a truck in five hours flat, earning him a role as the
first mechanic in GDS.
Soon GDS was joined by other mechanics, engineers and construction workers, all of whom began to fix up aging vehicles, fix up any troublesome infrastructure, and draw up plans for further improvements. As operations expanded in scope the Mechanical Legion was formed to handle the maintenance, upkeep, construction, and engineering required to ensure all aspects of GDS remained serviceable and in top shape. From there the Mechanical Legion began planning out and building new bases, new barracks, new operations centers, new offices, new infrastructure, and in time entire fortresses.
Handling vehicle, aircraft and base maintenance/engineering aren’t the only areas that the Mechanical Legion oversees; they also handle the same work for drones, cybernetic prosthetics, and biotech. While one legionnaire may be working on the drive shaft of a supply truck, another could be repairing microscopic circuitry within a Saturn Breaker or repairing the connective sockets of Wyrok’s artificial musculature. This wide range of skills and in-depth knowledge is what culminated in the greatest achievement of the Mechanical Legion so far: the construction of Glacier and its complimentarily colossal dry dock.
When not keeping all of GDS functioning despite its own efforts to the contrary, the Mechanical Legion takes on contracts for both mostly private clients with the odd federal client appearing from time to time. Most of the work taken on by the Mechanical Legion include engineering consultancy, road repairs, city infrastructure overhauls, public transit repairs, business facility repairs, or assisting with cleanup and restoration after a natural disaster.
Within the Mechanical Legion are the following special operations groups.
Forge Priests
Often touted as the pinnacle of skill within the Mechanical
Legion, members of the Forge Priests are rapid repair and fabrication
experts that are deployed in times of great urgency. In most cases, a
detachment of Forge Priests are perfectly capable of rebuilding an entire
Armored Legion squadron overnight, constructing a Wyrok from spare parts,
or even rebuilding the frame of an aircraft in-between missions.
Memberships into the Forge Priests requires the Mechanical legionnaire to
demonstrate immense skill and knowledge, with practical tests ranging from
rebuilding a Hard Iron engine within six hours to troubleshooting a Rage
Warden reactor using only a wrench and a pencil.
Keeper Corps
Experts in the realm of infrastructure engineering, Keeper Corps
works on constantly improving and refining the architecture and facilities
of GDS installations. Notable Keeper Corps projects include the Dread Veil
dock, Iron Core Fortress, Raelgan’s Gate, and the ever-ongoing construction
of Frostfall.
Neuron
A highly specialized field even in the Mechanical Legion, Neuron
is a special operations group comprised of engineers that work alongside
the Science Legion in the advancement and refinement of cybernetics for
both drones and prosthetics.
Shockwave Evangelicals
Dedicated entirely to handling the largest and most dangerous
static weaponry in the GDS arsenal, members of the Shockwave Evangelicals
work as the engineers and mechanics for gunnery systems often the size of
entire buildings. A few notable gunnery systems under their purview include
the base defenses of Frostfall, Iron Core, Raelgan’s Gate, and every single
integrated system on Glacier’s hull.
