Summary:

As the 4 th Legion of GDS, the Science Legion acts as the researchers and inventors of GDS.

When it comes to predicting an organization’s future, one of the most critical aspects that must be considered is that organization’s capability to innovate and adapt in all situations or scenarios. For example, you could have an electronics company that cornered the market of residential tape reading devices. For a few years, that company will remain on top of their respective market until the point that another company pivots thanks to some new innovation they discovered. The market chooses that innovation as the most worthwhile one, and so it becomes the new standard to meet.
The tape company cannot do that, and so unable to adapt to changing requirements, it goes bankrupt.

This is an issue that GDS leadership realized early on in the company’s history.
Security and PMC work relies mostly on buying equipment and weapons from third party resellers, most of which was at least three generations old. While not an immediate issue, it placed GDS at a disadvantage versus other PMCs in the long term. Skill and training are at the core of competency, but not amount of competency will allow a legionnaire to see in the dark, shoot through new types of body armor, or communicate vital intel with absolute security.
In due time, any competition could begin running circles around GDS due to the company still fielding weapons older than their personnel.

The beginnings of the Science Legion started with the addition of Dr. Acris Baddarick to GDS, followed by them bringing on fifteen full-time research and development personnel. Within an incredibly short timeframe GDS was fielding upgraded equipment, weapons were refurbished and enhanced where possible and had future plans for entirely proprietary tech laid out the moment funding became available.
Within four years of Dr. Baddarick joining GDS the Science Legion created Plasmatic weaponry, and our research advantage has only skyrocketed from there to include uniform fabric tech, DFD, biotech, artificial musculature, and thousands of other inventions. From there, the Science Legion began to vastly expand their areas of operation from equipment and tech to hard scientific research such as physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology and beyond.

Rather than being only focused on GDS related research, the Science Legion takes on contracts with universities, academic institutes and even schools. In this capacity they provide teachers, researchers, engineers and subject matter experts to those that need their insight.
In many cases, GDS legionnaires have been responsible for assisting in the development of operating systems, embedded network infrastructure, satellite hardware, armor materials and weapon systems for both federal and private sector clients.

Within the Science Legion are a number of special operations groups, however due to the sensitive nature of their work most of them cannot be disclosed in an unclassified document. For that reason, I will only list the two special operations groups that already known.

Section 1
Comprised of experts across numerous fields, Section 1 is a rapid response team that investigates what can best be described as “monumental developments” or “unseen phenomena” both inside and outside of GDS research labs. When this occurs, Section 1 is deployed to the area to begin researching and recording events as they unfold, both to gain a greater understanding and to gather as much data as possible for further study at their own facility. During expeditions into the Dread Veil, Section 1 is often working around the clock to better understand the seemingly unknowable realities of the Celestial Throne. As a note to myself, I’m not entirely sure if any mention of the Celestial Throne or the expeditions is appropriate for this section, or even the manual in general, but I’ll leave it for now. – Hansuke

Cormorant Works
An elite research and development division, Cormorant Works is comprised of both Science Legion and Mechanical Legion researchers and engineers, focused solely on the advancement of GDS aeronautical technology with almost unlimited funding and autonomy. To that end, Cormorant Works was responsible for the invention, design, fabrication and successful testing of the Rage Warden and all its associated systems in a record 244 days.
