Shotguns, the bastard sticks of weapon loadouts, are for the legionnaire who finds themselves in two situations on a frequent basis:

· Tight spaces where you want to just point and shoot without worrying.

· Being too hungover to bother aiming in the first place.

As a weapon platform, the shotgun is most suited to close quarters fighting, crowd control purposes, or really really REALLY ruining the day of a single target. Within the Celestial Throne, a shotgun is often the ideal solution for frontline Vanguard squadrons handling swarms of early growth creatures or wraiths, as each pellet will easily shred through multiple threats before coming to stop.
Pair that up with machineguns and you’re in business to hold the line until their bodies make the barricade for you. Even the hardiest of creatures have no chance of shrugging off 35+ tungsten slug rods being blasted point blank into their guts.

In the interest of ongoing boundary pushing, we scaled up our shotgun weapon platforms to be suited for being mounted on tanks or base walls. In these instances, it's often referred to as a "scatter cannon" and you’d be exactly right to call such a weapon an indiscriminate "go to hell" hammer.
Imagine a shotgun that’s gauged to the same diameter as a battleship cannon, and the types of projectiles that are gonna be traveling out of that barrel en mass. Take your usual birdshot, expect the pellets are the size of cannon balls and covered in plasmatic matter, then throw 40 of those at a single target.

We don’t usually issue shotguns on the squadron level expect for specific missions, and our usage of the larger scale ones for base defense is also highly situational. But my God when a Wyrok gets a shotgun that’s scaled up to their size and closes in on the enemy, it’s an absolute massacre that I usually end up downloading and saving for frequent re-watches.
